Google AI Mode Ads Are Live in India: What Advertisers Should Do Now
Short answer: Google AI Mode ads are now live in India. Google has started showing ads inside and alongside AI Mode answers here. The ads are labelled “Sponsored” and appear mainly on shopping and commercial searches. India is in the first group of 10 countries outside the US to get them, announced on 29 October 2026. If you already run Search, Shopping or Performance Max campaigns, you don’t need a new campaign type. However, you do need better feeds, broader matching and cleaner conversion tracking.
Key takeaways
- Google AI Mode ads started rolling out in India at the end of October 2026.
- They appear mainly on shopping and commercial questions, so e-commerce, travel, education and local services are affected first.
- There is no separate campaign type. Instead, ads come from Performance Max, Shopping, broad match and AI Max campaigns.
- Because AI Mode has fewer ad slots, landing page quality and conversion data matter more than before.
What changed on 29 October 2026
AI Mode is the chat-style tab in Google Search that answers a question in full sentences, with links, instead of a list of ten blue links. Google first tested ads in AI Mode in the US in May 2025. At the end of October 2026 it began rolling them out to India, Australia, Canada, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore, with Brazil, Mexico and the UK following in Q4 2026.
- Where ads appear: within or next to the AI answer, mostly for commercial and shopping intent (“best water purifier under ₹15,000”, “Manali tour package for 4 people”).
- Label: every ad is marked “Sponsored”.
- Not yet in India: “multi-turn” ads that show on follow-up questions are still US-only.
- Fewer ad slots: Google says AI Mode shows fewer ads than a normal results page. Expect competition for those slots to be tighter.
Alphabet linked this directly to its results. In its Q3 2026 earnings, Search revenue growth slowed to 12% year on year, and Google’s Chief Business Officer pointed to fast growth in AI Mode queries, which carry fewer ads. Monetising AI Mode is now a priority, so expect more formats to follow.
Which campaigns can show Google AI Mode ads
Google has not launched a separate “AI Mode campaign”. Ads are drawn from the campaign types that already use AI-driven matching:
| Campaign type | Eligible? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Max | Yes | Product feed quality, asset groups, final URL expansion |
| Search with AI Max turned on | Yes | Search term matching, landing pages, negative keywords |
| Search with broad match | Yes | Smart bidding and conversion data |
| Shopping (Standard) | Yes | Merchant Center feed: titles, prices, availability |
| Search with exact/phrase match only | Limited | AI Mode queries are long and conversational, so exact match rarely triggers |
Confirm eligibility in your own account in the Google Ads Help Center, because Google adjusts this list as the rollout expands.
A 7-step plan to win Google AI Mode ads in India
- Turn on AI Max for your main Search campaigns. AI Mode questions are long (“which CRM is good for a 10-person travel agency in Delhi”). Exact-match keywords won’t catch them. Read our AI Max upgrade guide first.
- Fix your Merchant Center feed. Product titles should say what the product is, who it’s for and its key spec. Wrong prices or stock status get products disapproved fastest.
- Write landing pages that answer questions. AI Mode matches ads to the meaning of a conversation. A page that clearly states price, location, who it’s for and what’s included is easier to match than a thin page with one headline.
- Add negative keywords at account level. Broader matching brings irrelevant queries. Review the search terms report weekly for the first month.
- Use value-based bidding. Feed real lead or sale values back to Google (offline conversion import or enhanced conversions). Smart bidding needs this to decide when an AI Mode slot is worth it.
- Check Hindi and Hinglish queries. Many Indian searchers type in mixed language. Make sure your ads and landing pages cover the terms people actually use.
- Watch, don’t panic. Google doesn’t yet give a separate AI Mode column for ads in all accounts. Compare cost per lead before and after the rollout over 4 to 6 weeks.
What this means for organic traffic
Google AI Mode ads take some of the clicks that used to go to organic results. Third-party studies estimate that most AI Mode sessions already end without a click to a website. The answer is not to stop SEO. It is to be one of the sources the AI answer cites. In October 2026 Google also announced more inline links in AI answers and a test of an “official pages” section at the top of task-based answers, so being cited is now more valuable than before. See our guide on getting your business recommended by AI search.
Example: how a travel agency query works in AI Mode
Imagine someone in Delhi asks AI Mode: “Plan a 5-day Kashmir trip in December for a family of four under ₹80,000.” First, AI Mode writes an answer with an itinerary, weather tips and a rough budget. Then, if the question has commercial intent, a “Sponsored” package from a travel agency can appear inside or next to that answer.
So which agency gets that slot? Google looks at how well the ad and landing page match the full question, not just one keyword. For example, a landing page that clearly lists a 5-day Kashmir family package, the December price in ₹, what’s included and how to book is a strong match. In contrast, a generic “Kashmir tours” page with no price is a weak one.
In short, the businesses that describe their offer in detail will win more Google AI Mode ads placements.
Who should act first
- E-commerce and D2C brands: shopping queries are where AI Mode ads appear most.
- Travel, education and real estate: people ask long comparison questions in these categories.
- Local service businesses: “best dentist near Rohini open on Sunday” is exactly the kind of query AI Mode handles.

Frequently asked questions
Are Google AI Mode ads available in India?
Yes. Google began rolling out ads in AI Mode in India at the end of October 2026, as part of a 10-country expansion. They are labelled “Sponsored” and appear mainly on commercial and shopping searches.
Do I need a new campaign to show ads in AI Mode?
No. Eligible ads come from existing Performance Max, Shopping and Search campaigns that use broad match or AI Max. Check the Google Ads Help Center for the current eligibility list.
Can I target only AI Mode or opt out of it?
Google does not offer a separate AI Mode targeting or opt-out setting for Search ads at the time of writing. Placement is decided by the same auction and matching systems as other search inventory.
Will Google AI Mode ads cost more?
There are fewer ad slots in AI Mode than on a normal results page, so competition for them may be higher. Google hasn’t published CPC benchmarks for India. Track cost per lead, not cost per click.
Do AI Mode ads show for follow-up questions?
Not yet in India. Multi-turn ads, which appear on follow-up questions in a conversation, are currently limited to the US.
