Meta Andromeda Explained: Why Your Creative Is Your Targeting Now
Meta Andromeda is the system Meta uses to pick which ads are even considered for each person before the auction. It can evaluate far more ads at once than the old system, so on Facebook and Instagram today your creative does the targeting. Small Indian businesses get better results by running broad audiences, fewer campaigns, and many genuinely different ad concepts, rather than narrow interest targeting with one or two “hero” ads.
Key takeaways
- Meta Andromeda shortlists which ads each person could see, before the auction runs.
- Because it reads your ad content, creative now does much of the targeting.
- Broad audiences, fewer campaigns and many distinct ad concepts usually beat narrow interest targeting.
- Clean conversion data from the Conversions API helps the system find buyers, not just clickers.
What is Meta Andromeda?
When someone scrolls Instagram, Meta has millions of possible ads to show. It can’t run a full auction on all of them, so it first shortlists a small set of relevant ads. That shortlisting step is called retrieval, and Andromeda is Meta’s retrieval engine. Meta introduced it publicly in late 2024, built with NVIDIA hardware, and rolled it deeper into Advantage+ delivery through 2025 and 2026.
According to Meta, Andromeda can consider far more ads per person than the previous system. In practice, this means the platform now reads the content of your ad (images, video, text) to work out who it’s for, instead of relying mainly on the interests you select.
What Meta Andromeda changed for advertisers
| Old playbook | What works now |
|---|---|
| Detailed interest targeting, many small ad sets | Broad or Advantage+ audience, few ad sets |
| 2 to 4 “winning” ads, small tweaks to colours and headlines | Many genuinely different concepts: different hooks, formats, people and angles |
| Many campaigns with small budgets | Fewer campaigns with bigger budgets, so each exits learning faster |
| Pixel only | Pixel plus Conversions API with good event match quality |
One important detail: Meta Andromeda tends to treat near-identical ads as the same ad. Ten versions of one image with different button colours count as one concept. Ten different stories count as ten.
What “creative diversity” actually means
A different concept changes who the ad will appeal to. Vary at least one of these:
- Angle: price, speed, quality, trust, fear of missing out, a problem solved.
- Persona: student, working mother, small-business owner, retired couple.
- Format: talking-head video, UGC-style review, carousel, static image, before and after, screen recording.
- Hook: the first 3 seconds or first line of text.
- Language: English, Hindi or Hinglish, or a regional language for regional audiences.
Example for a travel agency selling a Kashmir package: a family video at Gulmarg, a price-breakdown carousel, a honeymoon couple reel, a “7 things nobody tells you about Kashmir in winter” static, and a customer testimonial in Hindi. Five concepts, five different audiences, one campaign.
A simple Meta Andromeda setup for budgets of ₹30,000 to ₹1,50,000 a month
- One sales or leads campaign with Advantage+ audience and only location and age as hard limits.
- One or two ad sets. Splitting a small budget across many ad sets keeps all of them stuck in learning.
- 6 to 10 distinct concepts live at a time. Add 3 to 5 new concepts every two weeks and pause clear losers.
- Set up the Conversions API. Send purchases or qualified leads from your website or CRM, not just page views. Aim for a good event match quality score in Events Manager.
- Judge creative on cost per result over 7 days, not on CTR after one day.
- Try Click-to-WhatsApp ads for lead generation. Indian customers often prefer chatting to filling forms, and your WhatsApp replies are free for 7 days after they message you from the ad. Read our WhatsApp API update for details.
Mistakes that hurt performance now
- Duplicating ad sets to “restart” learning.
- Running the same video with five different headlines and calling it testing.
- Stacking narrow interests (“travel + luxury + Delhi + 25–34”) on a small budget.
- Editing budgets and ads every day, which resets learning.
- Optimising for link clicks when you actually want leads or sales.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Meta Andromeda update?
Andromeda is Meta’s ad retrieval system. It shortlists which ads are considered for each person before the auction. Compared with the previous system, it can consider many more ads and relies heavily on the content of each ad to decide who it is relevant for.
Does interest targeting still work on Facebook ads?
It still exists, but for most advertisers broad or Advantage+ audiences now perform as well or better, because Meta uses the ad creative itself to find the right people.
How many ads should I run on Meta?
For a small business, 6 to 10 genuinely different ad concepts at a time is a practical target, refreshed every couple of weeks. Variations of the same concept with small changes don’t count as separate ads.
Do I need the Conversions API?
Yes, if you want reliable optimisation. The Conversions API sends events from your server or CRM to Meta, which recovers data the browser pixel misses and helps the system learn which people actually buy.
Is Advantage+ good for small budgets in India?
It can be, as long as your budget is concentrated in one or two campaigns and your conversion tracking is clean. Advantage+ needs conversion data to learn, so very small or fragmented budgets struggle with any setup.
