Search Console AI Overviews Report: How to See Your AI Mode Traffic

By Digisolvers 5 min read

Short answer: You can now see Search Console AI Overviews data. Google Search Console has generative AI performance reports that show how often your pages appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover. Google made them available to all websites worldwide by 31 August 2026. They show impressions by page, country, date and device, but not clicks yet. Use them to find which pages AI search already trusts, and which important pages it ignores.

Why this report matters

Before Search Console AI Overviews reporting arrived in mid-2026, website owners could not tell whether a drop in clicks came from AI Overviews or from a ranking loss. Search Console counted AI impressions inside the normal Web data with no way to separate them. The new reports separate them out for the first time.

This matters in India more than most markets. One third-party study (SEOprofy) found AI Overviews on about 26.8% of Indian queries, compared with 20.5% in the US. If you rely on informational keywords such as “how to”, “what is” or “best”, a good share of your audience now reads an AI answer first.

What the Search Console AI Overviews report shows (and what it doesn’t)

Shows Does not show (yet)
Impressions in AI Overviews Clicks from AI answers
Impressions in AI Mode Query-level data (the breakdown is by page, not search query)
Impressions in generative AI features in Discover Your position inside the AI answer
Breakdown by page, country and date (plus device in the Search report) Data for sites with very few AI impressions

If you don’t see the report, your site may not have enough AI impressions yet, or your property may still be waiting for access. Google’s help pages say the rollout is still in progress for some properties.

How to use Search Console AI Overviews data: a 30-minute monthly routine

  1. Open Search Console and select a Domain property (it covers http, https, www and non-www together).
  2. Open the generative AI performance report from the Search Console menu and set the date range to the last 3 months.
  3. Sort by page. Note your top 10 pages by AI impressions. These are the pages Google’s AI already uses as sources.
  4. Compare with the normal Search results report. If a page has high AI impressions but falling organic clicks, the AI answer is probably satisfying the searcher. Add something the summary can’t: a calculator, a price table, a downloadable checklist, a local case study.
  5. Find your missing money pages. Service and product pages with zero AI impressions need clearer, answer-first content. See our AI search optimisation guide.
  6. Filter by country. If you serve India but most AI impressions come from elsewhere, your content may be too generic. Add Indian prices in ₹, city names and local regulations.
  7. Log it. Keep a simple monthly sheet: page, AI impressions, organic clicks, conversions. Trends matter more than one month’s numbers.

How to measure clicks from AI search in the meantime

Search Console AI Overviews data has one big gap: it shows impressions, not clicks. Because of that, use Google Analytics 4 for the other AI tools:

  • ChatGPT: visits usually arrive with utm_source=chatgpt.com. (OpenAI briefly stopped adding this tag in early October 2026 and fixed it on 15 October, so expect a dip in that week.)
  • Gemini: Google started adding UTM parameters to outgoing Gemini links in October 2026.
  • Perplexity, Copilot and others: check the referral report for perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and similar domains.

Create a custom channel group in GA4 called “AI search” that collects these sources so you can see AI traffic and its conversions in one place.

Example: reading the report for a local clinic

Say a dental clinic in Pune opens the report and sees that its “teeth whitening cost” page gets many AI impressions, while organic clicks to it have fallen. That tells the clinic Google’s AI is using the page as a source but often answers the question itself.

So the clinic adds a clear price table in ₹, a before-and-after gallery and a booking button. As a result, people who do click arrive ready to book. Meanwhile, its “root canal treatment” page shows zero AI impressions, so it rewrites that page with a direct answer at the top and a short FAQ.

Should you opt out of AI features?

Search Console also has a property-level setting under Settings to exclude your site’s links and content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and related features. For most businesses this is a bad idea. You lose visibility in the place where more and more searches start, and you don’t get those clicks back in normal results. Consider it only if your content is your product (for example, a paid research publisher), and test it on a small section first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see Search Console AI Overviews traffic?

You can see impressions. Search Console’s generative AI performance reports show how often your pages appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover. Clicks are not included yet.

Why don’t I see the generative AI report in Search Console?

Your site may not have enough AI impressions, or your property may not have access yet. Google says the rollout is still in progress for some properties even though it announced worldwide availability in August 2026.

How do I track ChatGPT traffic to my website?

In Google Analytics 4, look for sessions with the source chatgpt.com. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to most outbound links. Group it with Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot referrals in a custom “AI search” channel.

Does appearing in AI Overviews help my business?

It can. Third-party research suggests brands cited in AI answers get more clicks per impression than uncited brands, both organic and paid. Being cited also builds recognition even when the searcher doesn’t click.

Should I block Google AI from using my content?

For most businesses, no. Opting out removes you from AI Overviews and AI Mode without giving you more traffic elsewhere. Only content publishers whose content is the product should consider it.
