Local SEO: 7 First Fixes That Actually Move Rankings
If your business serves customers in one city or area, local SEO is the cheapest way to get steady calls and walk-ins from Google. The good news is that you don’t need hundreds of backlinks or a big budget to start. A handful of basic fixes, done properly, are often enough to move you into Google’s map results. This guide covers the first local SEO fixes that actually move rankings, in the order we do them for our clients.
How local rankings work (in plain words)
When someone searches “physiotherapist near me” or “interior designer in Faridabad”, Google shows a map with three businesses (the “local pack”) above the normal results. Google decides who appears there using three things:
- Relevance: how well your business matches the search.
- Distance: how close you are to the person searching or the area they typed.
- Prominence: how well-known and trusted your business looks online, including reviews, mentions and your website.
You can’t change distance, but you can improve relevance and prominence. That is what the fixes below do.
Fix 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (earlier called Google My Business) is the single most important local SEO asset you own. If you do only one thing from this list, do this.
- Verify the profile so you control it.
- Choose the right primary category. This is one of the strongest ranking signals. “Dental clinic” is better than “Health”. Add a few accurate secondary categories.
- Fill every field: services, service areas, hours, holiday hours, attributes, appointment link and a short description that naturally mentions what you do and where.
- Add real photos of your place, team and work. Profiles with fresh photos tend to get more calls and direction requests.

Fix 2: Make your name, address and phone consistent everywhere
Google cross-checks your business details across the web. If your website says “Shop 12, Sector 16” and Justdial says “Shop No. 12, Sec-16, near the market”, with a different phone number, Google is less confident about you.
Pick one exact format for your name, address and phone number (NAP) and use it on your website, Google profile, social pages and directories. Fix old listings with outdated phone numbers or addresses. This one boring task often gives a visible jump in local visibility.
Fix 3: Build a proper page for each service and area
Your website tells Google what you do and where. A single “Services” page listing everything in one paragraph is weak. Instead:
- Create one page per main service, with a clear heading, what’s included, prices or price ranges, FAQs and photos of real work.
- If you serve several areas, create genuinely useful area pages, not copies with the city name swapped. Mention local landmarks, projects done in that area and how fast you can reach customers there.
- Put your city and service in the page title, for example “Root Canal Treatment in Faridabad | Sharma Dental”.
- Add your address, a map and a click-to-call button on every page.
Fix 4: Get more (and better) Google reviews
Reviews affect both rankings and whether people choose you. Ten recent, detailed reviews beat fifty old one-line reviews.
- Ask every happy customer, right after the job is done. Send your review link on WhatsApp with a short, personal message.
- Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and quickly. It shows Google and customers that you care.
- Never buy fake reviews or offer discounts in exchange for 5 stars. Google can remove them, and it can hurt your profile.
Fix 5: Make your website fast and mobile-friendly
Most local searches happen on a phone, often while people are on the move. If your site takes ages to load or the call button is hard to tap, visitors leave and Google notices. Compress images, remove heavy sliders, and make sure your phone number and WhatsApp button are visible without scrolling. Fix 6: Get listed in the right local directories
Citations (mentions of your business on other websites) still help, especially when they are consistent. Focus on quality over quantity:
- Major Indian directories such as Justdial, Sulekha and IndiaMART (for B2B).
- Industry platforms, like Practo for doctors or travel portals for tour operators.
- Local associations, chambers of commerce and city websites.
Use the exact same NAP format everywhere, and keep the descriptions and categories accurate.
Fix 7: Track what matters
Rankings change by location and device, so don’t judge success only by searching your own name. Track:
- Calls, direction requests and website clicks inside your Google Business Profile.
- Enquiries from your website forms and WhatsApp.
- Rankings for your main “service + city” keywords from a few nearby locations.
How long does local SEO take?
Profile fixes and review growth can show results within a few weeks. Website and content improvements usually take two to four months to show their full effect, depending on competition in your area. Local SEO compounds: every month of good work makes the next month easier.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a website for local SEO?
You can appear in maps with only a Google Business Profile, but a good website makes ranking easier and helps convert visitors who want more information before calling.
Can I rank in a city where I don’t have an office?
For the map results, it is hard without a real address in that area. You can still rank in normal search results with strong, helpful area pages, or use Google Ads to target that city.
Should I use keywords in my business name on Google?
No. Use your real business name. Adding extra keywords breaks Google’s guidelines and can get your profile suspended.
